Question

Laserfiche Webtools Agent No listening port could be assigned

asked on November 17, 2020

Web Client 10.4.2 includes Webtools Agent.  Webtools Agent uses ports 18435, 18436, and 18437.  When using Remote Desktop Services for remote desktops, the Webtools Agent runs fine for the first 3 users to login.  Once the 4th user logs in, an error message is displayed.

Laserfiche Webtools Agent

No listening port could be assigned

This prevents users from scanning.  Laserfiche has no plans for a way to only enable Webtools Agent only when needed for users scanning.

Does anyone have experience with a similar configuration and Webtools Agent?  Any ideas for a work around in this situation?

We are working on a fix for this, which will allow you to specify a larger range of ports.  I don't have an estimate for when it will be released. The bug# is 246659.

This was nearly 3 years ago, is there an eta on when this will be fixed?

I have a client also encountering this error. We'll try the attribute workaround for now but I would be interested to know when a fix will be released.

As I mentioned above, the fix is to allow administrators to configure what port range to use if the default range is already in use or too small for cases like terminal servers. Setting the attribute is one of the configuration steps necessary to take advantage of the fix.

We are encountering this error message using Laserfiche Cloud.  Opening the stated ports did not resolve.  We have a ticket open with support, but if anyone else has some bright ideas, I would love to hear them!

Thanks.

Did this ever get resolved for you?

Yes.  This was resolved.    Here are the instructions that were provided that resolved the issue.

4) Note that if the workstation being used with office integration is a terminal server, which I believe you indicated that it was, once a third person is signed into the terminal workstation, all default ports will be used. If more than 3 people will be logged into the server at once, we have some additional steps that can be taken to provide more ports values for webtools agent. I'll be attaching screenshots of examples of what the following two configurations should look like. The values in the screenshots are just examples and you can use the guidelines below to adjust those values:

A) In web client, this value will be added as an attribute named "[Options]WebtoolsAgentPortRange" to the Everyone group under Management > Everyone, with range value in Data

B) For Webtools Agent, create a subkey "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LASERFICHE\Webtools Agent" and add string value named "PortRange" with range value in the data column

Valid port range is 1024-65536 (Port 0-1023 are reserved for common TCP/IP applications). Note that we support the following port range formats which you can include in the above two configurations:

Range: "100-200"
Single port: "200"
Multiple ranges: "100-200,300-400",
Multiple ports: "100,200"
Combination of ranges and single ports: "100-200,300"

Simply not installing the webtools is a workaround for now, is there an estimate on when bug 246659 will be fixed yet?

Cheers!

This change was released earlier this year with 11.0.1. There is a necessary configuration step where you specify what port range should be used, so make sure you read the documentation.

Hi Brian,

What is the "necessary configuration step"? I can't seem to find any documentation on that.

Thanks.

It's called out briefly in https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1014418/list-of-changes-for-laserfiche-windows-client-11-update-3 . The idea is that in both the repository attributes and the registry on the client machines, you can specify a port range to use, something like "12000-13000".

Also following.  Is there a way to stop the error message from showing up without uninstalling the webtools?
