LF Admin Console- Background Thumbnail Generation

posted on November 11, 2020

Hello,

We have a customer with thousands of JPEG images, in various folders, that they have to keep in JPEG format.

Initial opening of folders with these images is very slow, as they are trying to generate the Thumbnails for the 1st time.

We are looking at the Background Thumbnail Generation option in the LF Admin Console.

If we enable this, will their LF Server take a performance hit until all thumbnails for all pages in the repository are created?

Appreciate the Feedback,

Jeff Curtis

The background thumbnail generation will not block anything, but it will use a significant amount of CPU. It processes one thumbnail at a time. When you enable the option, it will take up to 30 minutes until it starts, or you can restart the LF server service to have it start immediately.

Thanks Robert and just to confirm this will generate thumbnails for all LF entries, regardless of file type?

Thumbnails are generated for LF image pages, not for electronic files. For example if you import a PDF and choose to generate pages, those pages will have thumbnails but the PDF itself will not.

Hello Robert,

Just a follow up, for JPEG they would need to be converted for the Thumbnail Auto-Generate to work, correct?

Thanks,

Yes, the JPEG files would need to be converted to Laserfiche pages on import, instead of being imported as JPEG edocs. This is controlled with the import conversion list:
