Forms - Configuration improperly stating The Connection Verified for Notification Service Server

asked on November 4, 2020

I am troubleshooting a display issue in Forms that appears to be associated with this new Notification Service that gets installed with Forms. It appears the installer did not configure the server properly but the Test is showing that everything is verified.

Under the forms configuration, Laserfiche tab, there is now a Notification Service field. I have not modified the field value in any way, it is using what was defaulted by the installer.

I click Test Connection, it says

But I find this message in the event log

A connection to the notification server could not be made. Notifications and real-time updates have been disabled. [LFF8100-NotificationServerConnectionDown]

How can the connection be down if I am verifying it in the config?

Have you configured the settings on the Notification Service tab?

The Notification Service includes two Windows Services: Laserfiche Notification Master Service(use port 8268 by default) and Laserfiche Notification Hub Service(use port 8181 by default). The Notification Service can be installed on separate machine as Forms server. The configuration on Laserfiche tab is for Forms to connect to the Laserfiche Notification Master Service to send the update. The "Test Connection" will check the address configured(localhost:8268 by default as Notification Service is installed on same machine as Forms by default) can be connected. But there is configuration required for the Notification Service itself which is on the Notification Service tab to configure the URL for the Hub Service for the Master Service. The Master Service will receive the update from Forms and send it to Hub Service and Hub Service will send the update to the web browser currently opening Inbox page. So the URL for the Hub Service need to be accessible both by the Master Service and the browsers that will access the Forms web page(it usually needs to use Full Qualified Domain name for the machine), it can not use localhost by default. That's why there is no default configuration for the Hub URL after install and also no test button for the Laserfiche Notification Hub URL. To test the Notification Service is configured correctly, you can check the task count number shows up in the Inbox task navigation, that's a sign that the Notification Service works.

I entered the fully qualified machine name with a :8181 and saved. It asked me to restart the notification master service. I did so, no errors. It is still testing successfully but posting this warning in the event log

A connection to the notification server could not be made. Notifications and real-time updates have been disabled. [LFF8100-NotificationServerConnectionDown]

Also, the green task count is not showing, which is what I was originally troubleshooting.

I do not think the test is working properly since it is clearly saying that it can not make a connection with the notification server. If the notification server is not the notification service, then what is it and why can't I connect to it?

What version of Forms are you using? Do you use SSL for the Hub URL?

If use SSL, make sure you follow https://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/10/en-US/administration/#../Subsystems/Forms/Content/Notification-Service.htm  to configure SSL. You can also refer to https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/147581/Forms-Notification-Hub-not-working-on-SSL

If it still doesn't work. you can open a support case for further troubleshooting.

This has been happening since around the 10.3.1 release and in every version since.

The server I am looking at now is a fresh install of 10.4.1.

We are not using SSL or any network connections for accessing the services right now, this is a default installation with no isolated servers hosing any services. The services are all on the same operating system.

It just appears to be a problem with the Forms installer or configurator. We have filled out the required configuration fields and tested with a verification of successful configuration. Yet the event viewer continues to post this error every hour or so.

You will get  [LFF8100-NotificationServerConnectionDown] error every time a user open the Inbox. You can try restart Laserfiche Notification Master Service from Windows Services first(This will be reminded after you configure the Hub URL from configuration)

If still does not work, please open a support case with config files(C:\Program Files (x86)\Laserfiche\Laserfiche Notification\Hub\Laserfiche.PushNotificationService.Hub.Host.exe.config, C:\Program Files (x86)\Laserfiche\Laserfiche Notification\Service\Laserfiche.PushNotificationService.Master.Host.exe.config) and the event logs from Applications and Services Logs->LFNotificationService.
