Import Agent 9 - End Of Life

asked on November 3, 2020

Hi All,

Many of our customers don't have servers which meet minimum spec for Import Agent 10, mainly around the minimum CPU speed of 2.4GHZ processor.

This leaves us with the only option of installing IA 9.0.0.464.

As per the product support lifecycle, Laserfiche 9 goes end of life on December 31st 2021. https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1013772/laserfiche-product-support-lifecycle

Will this include Import Agent 9 as well?

I'm raising this well ahead of time, as if we have to get our customers to upgrade all their servers this is a rather large undertaking which we'll need to know about well in advance.

Cheers!

Just as an update, the minimum specs for IA10 have been lowered to 1.8GHZ. yes

Hi Chris, Import Agent will follow Laserfiche policy and support lifecycle.

Thanks Tianxia,

This may cause a huge problem for us. I'll discuss internally and let you know.

In the meantime, do you think I could 'float' the idea that perhaps IA 9 could be re-badged as Import Agent Lite?

2.4GHZ processor is a big ask for most on premise customers.

Cheers!

What CPUs do you usually see? We usually base our requirements on fairly recent desktop-grade machines.

Usually server side most of the base line stuff is around 2.0GHZ or 2.2GHZ. All of the base stuff from Azure is 2.3GHZ for example.

2.4GHZ is just that little bit out of reach.

I've installed IA 10 on many machines which are below 2.4GHZ in the hopes that it might work, but what seems to happen is it just triggers an endless amount of lfomniocr19.exe processes, which eventually consumes all the CPU and RAM, sometimes even causing the server to crash. So it's a conclusive 'no that doesn't work'. It must be 2.4GHZ or higher. The only solution here is to downgrade to IA9.0.0.464.

I just hope that IA9 is around for a little while yet (~5 years or so) until basic spec servers can catch up with the IA10 requirements.

Hi Chris,
The lfomniocr19.exe issue may actually be unrelated, as it sounds like an issue we fixed in Import Agent 10.3.1 update 1. See https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1013967/list-of-changes-for-laserfiche-import-agent-10-3-1-update-1- .

Thanks Tessa. Yeah we had applied this update along with update 2 as well. Didn’t make any difference. I’ve seen the same and similar things across multiple sites (5+).

Basically, Import Agent behaves REALLY strangely if the machine it’s on doesn’t meet minimum spec. Sometimes it also just sits there with the service running and does nothing at all! Fun times...

Hi Chris,

To run Import Agent 10 on machines which are below 2.4GHZ, I think the multi-thread feature needs to be disabled.

To do that, navigate to HKLM\Software\Laserfiche\Import Agent\Settings and add a new string value "ImportThreadCount". set the value 1. Note, the setting will decrease the thread count and reduce the efficiency.

Hi Huazhen,

Interesting, I'll give that a try.

As a feature request, this isn't going to go away. Could this setting perhaps be incorporated into the IA10 settings somewhere, rather than a manual reg entry?

Cheers!

Hi Chris,

Yes, that can be exposed through user interface if we confirm it is helpful. By the way, the CPU requirement is mostly for OCR. Another way to try is to disable the OCR when importing, while configure DCC server to perform the OCR.
