Laserfiche Directory Server Groups do not show under the Groups tab of the User Account in Admin Console

posted on September 25, 2020

This can be confusing since the Groups tab has long been used to see any and all groups a user is a member of. Now someone can be in groups both in Directory Server and Repository Groups without a way to see all group membership in one place.

There is a new Laserfiche Directory Accounts node to signify that the account came from Directory Server, maybe there could be a Laserfiche Directory Groups node too.

Chad, I believe the thought behind repository groups vs directory server groups is to use one or the other. If you are going to use LFDS to manage users and groups then manage it all there. You would then go into the Admin Console for said repository and in the Laserfiche Directory Accounts you would add the LFDS groups for that repository.

If you want to manage users and groups from a repository level, you would usually assign the licenses to the LF Server license and do it all from the Admin Console. Obviously, if you go this route you lose LFDS authentication options with the web products.

In the end though, I find it is easier to decide where you will manage users and groups and just use that product to do it. I almost always use LFDS now.

Hi Blake

Yes, I probably wouldn't have been confused by it in an environment I am working in often. But since I am only popping in on occasion to assist, across a huge number of environments, I think that is why it felt extra confusing to me. When I click on a user, and select groups, but there is in fact groups not listed, it just threw me off.

When I talked to the Laserfiche Administrator they knew right away what the problem was because they were doing like you said, sticking with DS for group management.

Yeah, I did the same thing originally. It's kind of in a hybrid solution I'm sure until LFDS becomes a requirement.
