Question

Document Viewer Default Setting

asked on September 8, 2020 Show version history

This question is in regards to the Web Client in version 10.4.

We recently upgraded to LaserFiche 10.4.  Previously, in the version 10.2 web client, whenever any user clicked on a PDF document in the repository, it automatically opened in the document viewer.  They could opt to download the file but the default on clicking was to open in the document viewer.

Now, in 10.4 web client, the default seems to depend on the user.  When I log in with my Admin access and click on a PDF, it opens immediately in the document viewer.  When a user with lesser permissions does the same, it automatically brings up the message box to download and open externally.  They can open it in the document viewer but they have to right click on the document and select that.  Its not the default.

Is there a setting for this default somewhere.  We would like PDFs to open automatically in the document viewer for all users without them having to select it.

Thanks

Hi Katherine,

There is a user attribute that controls the default behavior for "electronic documents" such as PDFs.

Individual users can set their preference in Web Client by clicking their name and selecting "Options" from the dropdown. From Options, select the Display tab and locate the Viewing section.

Changing and saving the default behavior from that screen alters a "User Attribute" called [Settings]EdocViewBehavior.

The attribute value "openEFile" represents the default behavior you desire.

You can add this attribute and value pair to the Everyone account to make it the new global default (or modify the value if the attribute already exists). Do note that attribute values set at the individual user level will take precedence over those set on Everyone. Some of your users may need to update their own preferences as shown in the first screenshot if updating the Everyone default doesn't affect them.

Hope that helps.
