Custom action to Download electronic documents in Web

asked on September 8, 2020

Hello everyone,

I have a user requesting that when they click the download button in WA that instead of getting the prompt to select how you are downloading, they want it to just download. What interesting is that if I don't generate text on these Word documents, if you click the download button, it downloads the file. No options because there is only 1 type (Electronic File). What has happened recently is I generated text on these Word docs so now my users are getting the prompt.

To me, its a small issue but I keep getting asked to bypass this prompt and always download the file. Any ideas on how to accomplish this request? Would it be a Custom Action? I could not find a setting to make a default selection. Thank you

If the document has multiple data streams that the user could be interested in, it will always prompt the user to choose. As you've found, not having the text extracted means that this dialog won't come up, and that's probably a usable solution for you - in general, there isn't any loss if you don't have the text extracted.

I understand Brian, the problem is that my users want the text generated so they can search certain terms throughout the document. They are never going to download the text from the document or the image. I understand that if there are different ways to download the document, the system should show them, but I want to default this process to a specific action based on the needs of my users. That option is to always download the electronic file. Laserfiche has all kinds of default actions and this is just another place I feel like there should be the option to always download the electronic file.

There has to be a way to give my users the ability to download the electronic document with one click.

The search you want to support, do you mean built-in Laserfiche search? Because it doesn't require that you have extracted text into pages in the document. As long as that file type has an ifilter set up, the indexer can pull out the text data and index that. You can check that extraction is possible in the "Electronic Text Extraction" tab of Index in the admin console.
