Question

domain migration windows accounts

asked on July 29, 2020

Hi All,

I have a customer who is moving Laserfiche to a new domain.

They have a mixture of Repository users and Windows accounts (individual users not groups)

They also have not grasped the concept of groups:) with user permission set per folder:(

I need to change the windows users to the new domain.

Is it possible to change the domain\user fields in the database to the new domain?

I have the windows SID from the old domain and I can get the windows SID on the new domain I also have the Laserfiche SID for each user.

Mainly this is to avoid checking the permissions on each folder to add a new windows account.

The Laserfiche accounts are simple as I can just change the Domain account in the properties but windows accounts are greyed out so I need to recreate them in the new domain. Then check each folder to see if I need to add rights.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

PS they are looking to clean up the repository by exporting the latest files and importing them into a clean repository and have groups setting permissions but they need to move the current repository first.

I have tried out of desperation. I can not remember exactly what happened but there was no way to prevent sever corruption in testing.

First we tried replacing the SID of the account in the database. Then starting up Forms while hooked up to the new domain and ready to sync. We expected it would find the matching SID and simply think that account was good to go. Instead it made a new account regardless.

Then we tried to hook forms up to the new domain, sync in the new account, then go in and swap all information from the old account to the new account, including the Forms User ID. This just caused it to create a new account again I believe, I remember it not being successful anyways.

We probably went further than any other VAR to attempt this based on previous posts over the years regarding the subject, but ultimately we need someone who understands the Forms database at a more advanced level.

Edit: We never got as far as trying in the Repository database for security, but it would be the same approach. Either swap the SID or swap all information to the new account once created.
