Question

Web Client Single Tab Browsing

asked on June 10, 2020

Is there a way to limit the amount of web client tabs to one? For example, if I browse to a document and open the document viewer, can the document viewer open in the same tab, or close the previous tab.

We have a process using an embedded form in the document viewer of Web Client that after completing moves the document to a new location. Pressing the back button results in a refreshed browse view, but now two tabs are open. What is the point of a back button if it just compounds the amount of tabs every time its pressed? We want to be able to automatically refresh the repository without having so many tabs open.

We wanted to always have a way to get back to the document's folder because it's pretty common for a user to open the viewer from elsewhere. If they clicked a link in an email or on a form then they won't already have a tab open to the folder browser. It also handles the case where the user closes the folder browser tab.

There isn't a way to alter that behavior. Can you train your users to close the document viewer tab when they are done?

We can, that is no problem. However with Web Client not having an automatic update feature, users were getting confused why a document that should have moved had not (the refresh button is lit up to indicate a change). Hitting the back button within the document viewer comes with the extra benefit that the repository also refreshes.

We will train them to close the extra tabs, I was mostly inquiring to see if there was a display option for users to decide when a new tab is opened, or an option to automatically close the old tab.

For the refresh behavior, we don't have it currently exposed as an option in the UI, but there is a user attribute "[WebAccess]AutoRefresh" that you can set on a user or the Everyone group. When that's enabled, instead of getting the light on the refresh button, the current listing will automatically be refreshed.

This is great news!

Is there a white paper that lists all user attributes? Is this attribute set to true? What data needs to be input for this attribute to work?

It's been 4 years since this post, and Laserfiche has leaned heavily into having customers use the Web Client and Cloud.  Is there now a way for customers to define the behavior to just stick with one tab, or close the document viewer tab when the user presses "Back"?

We have a customer requesting this, and I'd be surprised if these two instances are the only times the complaint has arisen.
