Question

why is a blank field filling with "cookies"?

asked on May 4, 2020

Why is a blank number field in a table prefilling with what I presume to be "cookies" from MS Windows(?)?

This is a new timesheet submission report.  It only started prefilling this week (second month in use) and it is not doing this for everyone, only two people have reported it to me and when I test I do not get this prefilling.

It is prefilling the number (Hours Absent) with the person's email address.

My guess is that it's the browser's autofill function trying to be helpful.

What browser (Chrome, FF, IE...) are each of those users experiencing the problem using? Do other users use that browser also?

What version of the browser is showing the problem? It's possible those two users either updated or have an older version of the browser.

What version of Forms are you on?

One thing to try would be to ask those two users to disable autofill on their browser or try another browser.

Thanks, Jared, that is something I can check:  What browser are they using.  They might not have been using Chrome.

We are on the latest version of Forms and the latest version of Chrome, but I know some people don't know that Chrome is best for LF Forms.  I mention it when I think of it, but I don't connect with every user very often.

Thanks, Jared, I think this is the clue that I needed to help people when they are asking me why that field is filling in.  I actually did give them the answer you suggested as the likely reason, but I decided to ask the question in case there was something I can do to stop it from happening, like suggesting they use Chrome!  Nice easy answer!  I did suggest someone clear their cookies so we could see if that was the issue, but they were reluctant to do so.

Hmmm, one of the people who reported the email address in the number field was running Chrome and was using the exact same version I was:  Version 81.0.4044.129 (Official Build) (64-bit)

And I don't get the issue happening, so it's not the different brower/version causing it.  Rats!  That would have just been too easy, I guess.

For the user experiencing the issue, you could try turning autofill off or clearing the autofill data.

Turning Off Autofill in Chrome

  1. Click the Chrome menu icon. (Three dots at top right of screen.)
  2. Click on Settings.
  3. In the "Autofill" section, expand the area for which you wish to disable Autofill.
  4. Toggle the setting OFF if it is on.  The system will automatically save your settings.

Clearing Autofill Data in Chrome

  1. Click the Chrome menu icon. (Three dots at top right of screen.)
  2. Click on History, then click on History again in the menu that appears.
  3. Select Clear browsing data.
(Alternatively, you can press CTRL+SHIFT+DEL on your keyboard to bypass steps 1-3.)
  4. At the top, choose “the beginning of time” option to clear all saved data.
  5. Make sure that the “Clear saved Autofill form data” option is checked.
  6. Click Clear browsing data.

If you don't want to do it at the browser level, you can also disable autocomplete at the form or individual element level:

Okay, thanks, Rich.  I will check with my LF IT support and see if we should do that.  Even if its just temporary just to clear things out.
