Question

Read only multivalue field

asked on March 16, 2020

A customer has a multivalue "Comments" field in a template applied to docs.   They want the field "read only"  after the first person has put a comment on it (first index),  but someone can add another index value on the same field.

I can take away rights to "edit" for the field, but when I do it also removes the rights to add another value to the field.  Any way to work around that.

The objective is, once a comment is put on to make it read only, but still allow additional comments to the additional index values of the field by other users.

Any ideas?

You could have a New Comment field that when it has a value, have workflow copy the value into the multivalue Comment field and clear the value of the New Comment.  Then the users can add comments through the New Comment field and only Workflow would need rights to edit the multivalue Comment field.

Yep, what @Bert said. Also, to make it more fancy, I normally make the New Comment field about 30 characters more narrow than the Comment field. That gives me room to prepend the comment with a date and/or username:

17-03-2020 (username) -

giving some structure and context to the comments.

Thanks guys.   I run it up the flagpole and try it out with the customer.
