Question

File Size reduction in cloud

asked on March 11, 2020

We have migrated 100% to the cloud. I have noticed that files of significant size that used to open up rather quickly locally are painfully slow to open from the cloud now.

Is there a mechanism to reduce the file sizes for all large documents in the cloud? I know that we could bring them down from the cloud...convert to a smaller size then upload....that that would be extremely time intensive as the downloading would take weeks.

Many thanks (If anyone has best practices to scanning to keep files smaller that would be welcome too...Note : we must have color and 200 DPI seems optimal for us)

Can you tell me more about your situation? It sounds like you are scanning color at 200 dpi. Are these 8.5 x 11 letter size pages? Are you viewing them at default zoom ("fit width")? What specifically is slow? The initial load of the document viewer page? Or the image loading into the page?

Thank you for the reply Brian,

The pages are plans, diagrams and an plots from various sizes. Typically Letter, Legal and A3.

The events I have found to be very slow in the cloud are :

1. The "Store Documents" after scan. Note the speed is significantly improved if the desktop client (10.4) is used vs webaccess but still slower.

For example: a 7mb document takes 1 minute to store but using the desktop it take 15 seconds for exact same document. On premise it is a blink.

2. The Search and then download the search results to an excel file. May take 10-15 seconds on premise can take 15-20 minutes.

3.  Briefcase import: Can take a 2 minutes on premise but in the cloud it took me about 45 minutes yesterday.

I am sure there are other items but I have not hit every feature yet.

Please note that I have the network engineer watch the network and internet pipe during this testing and the it was not saturated. Other non-laserfiche cloud activity worked normal during this testing time.

Thanks for the information.

  1. We deployed an infrastructure update last week that should improve the performance when scanning through the web. I'd be curious if you can see a difference.
  2. How many search results are there, and how many columns do you have selected?
  3. We are currently working on speeding up import. How large a briefcase are you working with? Is briefcase import going to be a normal part of your workflow, or is this more part of a transition to cloud?

Thanks Brian!. Sorry for the little delay as we had some COVID-19 stuff to square away and I couldn't test until this afternoon.

1. There is a significant improvement: 16mb files in webaccess used to take about 120 seconds can now store in less than 70 seconds. This is still slower than desktop but a welcomed improvement.

2. The search results I have been testing are between 6000 and 44,000 results with a column count of 5

3. The briefcase import was more a migration task but I wanted to share that in case it provided info to the other slowness.

Thanks again for your assistance
