Forms SMTP - Says requires a secure connection when I have Use a secure connection checked

asked on February 28, 2020

I am attempting to send emails through a common SMTP server, smtp.gmail.com and I get the following message even though I have Use a secure connection checked. How can this be? Does it mean that their credentials are invalid?

The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated.

If you're using any version of Forms prior to 10.4.2, try this:

Also triple-check your credentials.

They are on 10.4.2 but trying in workflow SMTP config revealed this error code 5.7.0 which means failure to authenticate. I think something is wrong with their user account rather than my security configuration settings.

Yeah, the issue is almost certainly with the SMTP user account if you're seeing a similar authentication error in Workflow as well.

Can you actually post the full Workflow error including the stack trace?

Figured it out. It was denying authentication, but not because the credentials are wrong.

Because Google was sending an email to the SMTP account mailbox to verify that the request was valid.

I guess they need an error code for this, I was assuming auth failed means bad password.
