metadata disappears upon mass change

We are seeing certain metadata fields erased when mass changes are made that kick off a workflow. This is intermittent and isn't specific to a vendor.  It doesn't happen if we don't use the mass change feature.  Has anyone else run into this or have a suggestion of how to fix it?  Since the issue is intermittent, it has not been able to be solved my our VAR.

Are you sure it is being caused by a workflow?  Workflow designer history shows it assigning blank values to metadata fields?  Track tokens and figure out what that workflow is doing that isn't desirable.
