Question

Laserfiche and (Chromium) Edge

asked on January 31, 2020 Show version history

Hello,

I just wanted to get some thoughts/input from Laserfiche (and the community) regarding the new Chromium-based version of Edge.

In theory it "should" be compatible with pretty much anything that works in Chrome, but as we all know things don't necessarily work that way in practice.

The main reason I wanted to get feedback on this topic is that so far Edge seems like it could be a very attractive option for many organizations (as it is for us).

We have started testing the new Edge, and the IE Mode option for legacy sites seems like exactly what we needed to finally change our "official" default browser.

Although as a developer I do not at all like having to cater to the limitations of IE, we are still in the process of replacing some business-critical applications that require IE so we've essentially been "locked in" until that is complete.

On the other hand, despite its better overall performance compared to IE and the "original" Edge, I'm not a big fan of Chrome in the enterprise environment, primarily due to policy management and the almost non-existent privacy and tracking prevention options (there are some fairly extensive privacy and tracking prevention settings in the new Edge).

In summary, I'm curious as to how much support Laserfiche might provide for this new version of Edge, and how much interest there is within the Laserfiche community.

Update: In configuring Laserfiche Connector, I found that it is not possible to run IE Mode while Remote Debugging is enabled. As a result, if the goal is to utilize the embedded IE Mode functionality of Edge, UI Automation must be used instead of JavaScript analysis.

We're still validating a few things before we post an official article, but at this time it looks like it works pretty much like Chrome (as it should be).

The Chrome extension that launches Scanning and Office in 10.4.1 and lower is correctly detected in Chromium Edge if already installed in Chrome.

One known issue is that Connector and the RPA recorder do not work with Chromium Edge. This is actually not specific to Chromium Edge, it's any app that runs Chromium under the hood (but is not Google Chrome).

Hi Miruna,

What issue is encountered with Connector? I was actually just about to post that a few minutes ago I went through the same configuration steps listed for Chrome and was able to get a basic profile working in Edge with Connector 10.3.0.242.

I don't have all the details, but I'm told the app is being recognized as Chrome and then the user gets an error about how Connector can't find the tab with the given URL.

Interesting. Just to share my experience, I got a profile working but it did not work "perfectly" because the profile creator actually didn't seem to recognize it correctly and detected the tabs as "windows"

As a result, I did not get the option to configure a URL; it treated it like an application window and to get it working I basically had to use the document title.

That is the issue with the app not being recognized. This has been addressed in the latest Connector patch.
