Question

Shut down during copy/paste

asked on January 27, 2020

I have a user that has issues during the copy/paste process within Laserfiche. She right clicks on the document in Laserfiche to copy, then navigates to the appropriate folder, also in Laserfiche,  and pastes a shortcut. This is not working consistently. Frequently, the program will shut down after the item is copied. AS far as I can tell, she has all the appropriate rights and we have cleared the clipboard. Any ideas?

I have noticed that this was an issue in earlier versions, but we are up-to date. I cannot replicate the issue when I am signed in, but I have watched it shut down as she did it.

Hello Mary,

I am sorry to hear about the difficulty you are having.  Would you mind providing a bit more information about the problem?  Here is a short list of questions that will guide us to better understand what is the root cause of the problem.

1. What application is the user running?  Laserfiche Desktop Client?  Laserfiche Web Client?

2. You mentioned this one user is experiencing a crash but you do not.  Do you have the same role within the organization?  Is this particular user a new user?

3. Does the paste work properly in certain folders but not others?

4. What is the source of the files to be copied?  Is the user copying files from one single folder or from copying files different source directories?

5. Do the file(s) being copied have metadata (templates or fields) or tags associated?

1. What application is the user running?  Laserfiche Desktop Client?  Laserfiche Web Client?

User is using primarily Desktop Client, but we have tried it in Web Client. The same thing happens.

2. You mentioned this one user is experiencing a crash but you do not.  Do you have the same role within the organization?  Is this particular user a new user?

We have a different role. She is a regular user, and I am admin. She has been using Laserfiche for 2-3 years. The problem started just after Christmas during year end.

3. Does the paste work properly in certain folders but not others?

It seems to be the copy feature that is triggering the program to close. If there is a delay after she copies, it generally shuts down. If it is working, there is no delay and she is able to paste the document/folder shortcut. It seems to be random.

4. What is the source of the files to be copied?  Is the user copying files from one single folder or from copying files different source directories?

They are is the same directory. It is just to place shortcuts in a related folder within the structure.

5. Do the file(s) being copied have metadata (templates or fields) or tags associated?

They have associated metadata. No tags.

Mary,

Thank you!  I am going to take a few minutes to prepare a response for the next steps.  While I work on tracking down these clues, would you mind to add any information about any system changes (both Windows and Laserfiche) since November/December of last year?

One more thing.. only so I do not assume anything.  Has this user created shortcuts using this same copy/paste method in the past or is this something new?

Nothing in regards to Windows or Laserfiche has changed...at least, I am not aware of anything.

She has made copied and pasted shortcuts in the past. There has been a higher than normal volume of this activity as she updates her files for year end.

Mary,

The fact that you and the user have different roles does lead to a possibility the effective rights of the user have somehow become insufficient for creating links (assuming by "links" you refer to shortcuts, not link groups).  Based upon your answers I am not convinced this is the problem as long as nothing has changed for reasonable time.

It sounds like you have already done this, but could you confirm these two things:

1. The user effective rights will allow them to copy the entry from each location

2. The Scope of the rights applies sufficiently for the folder, subfolders, and documents within each location for source documents?

3. Could you tell me if there any additional users fulfilling similar roles that see the same behavior?

Your most recent post refers to higher than normal activity.  Plausible, but I am not certain this would be a root cause unless more users are experiencing problems.  However, you did mention in your original post noticing this behavior with prior versions of Laserfiche.  This does get my attention as a potential performance related issue.

Do you have any work (such as indexing documents) that can be scheduled for off-peak hours?

If you would like to test performance then Windows Performance Monitor can be used to collect data for review.  Use this link for more information.

Try disabling Clipboard History in Windows Settings.

Search for Clipboard Settings from Windows Start Menu and set Clipboard History to Off.
