Update Word Document with Text from Source Document

asked on January 21, 2020

We have thousands of word documents that were created and saved in the wrong format and the program that created the documents is no longer available.  To get the format to be correct, users are going in one by one to change the orientation and margins of the word document.  I am trying to get Workflow to grab the text from the existing document, then place that text into a new word document with the correct orientation and margins.  The Simple Field Merge on the Update Word Document activity finds the field name to update.  However, when I run the workflow the word document is not updated.

I have tried Type being Default and String. Any idea why it will not insert my retrieved text to this word document?

Retrieve Document Text does not read Word documents. It only reads text pages (which a Word document would only have if it's been text-extracted). Note that this extracted text would be plain text and not retain any Word formatting.

Do your documents have text pages?

The documents do have text pages and within the WF Tokens tab, the text is there as a token value.

Hm, that workflow seems to work fine for me. Just so we cover all our bases:

  • are you attaching the updated Word doc to the newly created entry?
  • are you looking at the right doc?
  • What exactly do you see in the new Word doc?

Yes, the updated Word document is getting attached to the newly created entry.

Yes, we are looking at the right doc.

We only see the name of the merge field in the Word document.

Can you open a support case and attach the Word doc and a sample text doc, please?
