Question

Add/ Edit Location feature in Web Client?

asked on January 10, 2020

Just had a customer call in with some questions about the add/ edit location feature in web client and I can't find any information in the admin guide, or on this site. Hopefully someone with some more experience can shed some light.

1) Is this feature available in the desktop client or just the web client?

2) Is it possible to add a location by coordinates rather than address? They have records for new divisions that do not have addresses yet.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes, with the caveat that google/arcgis will try to find the nearest known address to populate the description. The location stored in laserfiche is two parts: the GPS coordinates and the location description. The gps coordinates will be correct but the location description will auto-populate with something that looks wrong. The description can be corrected after saving.

Here is a link to the help documentation that will guide you through adding/editing location data to existing documents. It appears when browsing the online help documentation tree structure that the link is broken.

I believe that this is only available in the Web Client and not the Windows Client. The Windows Client does not include a location search option and does not include a details pane like the Web Client does (that is where the location information appears).

Thanks Blake, very helpful. From what I can gather from that article, only addresses can be added as a location at this time, right?

With Google Maps and ArcGIS you can enter GPS coordinates into the location input (where it says "enter an address") and it will lookup the address for you:

Thanks Robert. For this particular customer they are looking to use only the coordinates since the plots they are referencing don't have addresses yet. Is that possible?

One small thing I wanted to add - while the visualizations for the map functionality is only in the web client and Laserfiche mobile app due to the web technology used to interface with the mapping services, the Windows Client is able to extract location data at import time and ensure that it is stored along with the documents in the system. We wanted to ensure that the mapping data was there even if you wouldn't have the visualizations.
