Question

MS azure and Laserfiche

asked on November 10, 2019

Dears,

Hope i find you in good health!

A new customer is interested in knowing whether MS Azure is supported by Laserfiche. so i would like to ask a some questions regarding Laserfiche compatibility on MS Azure database:

  1. is Laserfiche compatible with MS Azure ?
  2. if yes, what is the minimum MS Azure version required ?
  3. if yes, which Laserfiche versions support MS Azure ?
  4. if yes, do all Laserfiche products having databases support MS Azure with no exceptions?
  5. Any limitations regarding Laserfiche being connected to MS Azure other than slower performance?

Thank you!

I've got a number of customers on azure.

1. Yes but also sort of. The current version doesn't support azure SQL farm for installation and upgrades because of the HA incompatibility. There are a number of ways around that.

The december release 10.4.2 should fix this :

https://support.laserfiche.com/roadmap/

2. The supported versions are here : https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1012418/supported-os-list-versions-7-8-9-and-10

3 and 4, see above

5. There are issues around authentication, depending on if you use a private VPN or not. Using LFDS can solve some of those issues (but not for Discussions)

Then of course you have to consider pen testing and resilience of such a system.

Thanks for your time Ben!

Regarding your answer on 2, there's no information about Laserfiche supported version for MS Azure.

Regardless, how do you describe your customer's experience of MS Azure and Laserfiche? are they satisfied despite the limitations mentioned ?

Hi Joseph,

When you say "version of Azure" I presumed you meant the versions of Windows supported by Azure. If that's the case, see the attached image and cross reference with the link above for supported OS's. Or did you mean something else?

As for the limitations, they all use Azure in different ways. Some have a private VPN. Some use the web functionality exclusively. They all have different issues (resolved in different ways) but they are all happy and continue to use Azure.

hi Ben,

By asking about the versions i was aiming for MS Azure versions.

If it's possible, are you aware of the MS Azure versions that your customers are using? We have never experienced a customer using MS Azure before and we would like to spot the light on it before proceeding.

Thank you again for your constant reply!

Hi Joseph, no worries.

Are you referring to these versions?

Azure Active Directory comes in four editions—Free, Office 365 apps edition, Premium P1, and Premium P2. The Free edition is included with an Azure subscription. The Premium editions are available through your Microsoft representative, the Open Volume License Program, and the Cloud Solution Providers program

Hi Joseph,

According to Laserfiche, up to SQL 2017 is supported:

https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1013784/laserfiche-server-10-supported-configurations

According to Wiki, that;s also the current (but not the only) version of SQL your customer could choose:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Microsoft_SQL_Server

Referring back to my first reply, HA is the only issues, for which there are a couple of work-arounds OR just wait until 10.4.2.

But more importantly, perhaps you should clarify with your customer what they mean by "Azure Versions" because these answers might not be of any use to you.
