Question

Laserfiche web plugin connector

asked on October 3, 2019

Hello,

Every time I want to open a document on the Web client to edit it by clicking on Edit With > Microsoft Word (Edit on your deskop), I have a pop up windows as attached. Is there a way to avoid to have it every time?

Thanks

Veronique

Hi Veronique,

Currently, there is no way to avoid this dialog when you launch an Office Document in it's native desktop application using Chrome.

Other browsers have similar dialogs that include a 'don't ask again' checkbox. Chrome used to have this checkbox, but removed it in v77: https://support.google.com/chrome/thread/14194567?hl=en. Since the dialog is in Chrome rather than the code we control, we can't directly resolve the issue via Web Client changes.

Laserfiche Web Client 10.4.2 will use a new protocol for launching local plugin applications, like the Laserfiche Office Integration or Laserfiche Desktop Scanning. This new protocol will avoid any pop-up dialogs in all browsers, including Chrome.

Hi Ryan, I work for the same company as Veronique in the role of Network Infrastructure Support Engineer. I have a couple of questions after reading your comments and the Chrome article you refer to:

- when is 10.4.2 expected

- as it is unclear that the next version (if they are willing at all to change it) of Chrome will revert/fix the issue I find the resolution (suggested by Gost Sn) at the end of the article very interesting

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome\URLWhitelist]

"1"="customprotocolexample://*"

I should be able to push that setting out by GPO but need to know what to put in the URLWhitelist ("1"="customprotocolexample://*" is only an example)

Appreciate your help

Adri

Laserfiche 10.4.2 is due out in November 2019: https://support.laserfiche.com/roadmap/.

For URL whitelist workaround, I would try lfwa80:// for the custom protocol format.

@████████ Hi Ryan, do you know if this issue will be fixed for cloud customers as well?

The new protocol mentioned above is already live in Cloud. Note- you'll need to update your locally installed version of Laserfiche Office Plugin or Laserfiche Scanning to use the latest protocol.

@████████ Thanks Ryan. I'm running Office Integration 10.4.2.152 and still seeing the pop-up. Do you know which version I need installed to use the new protocol?

Hi Henry,

Did you receive that build of Office Integration from a ticket with Laserfiche Support? It looks like Laserfiche Office Integration 10.4.2.146 is the latest released version in Cloud.

First off, I'd recommend going to Options page->Advanced from a machine with Office Integration installed. Check if 'Laserfiche WebTools Agent' is running.

If  it's not running, I recommend:

  1. Uninstalling Office integration from Client Machines
  2. logging into Laserfiche Cloud
  3. right Click on an Office Document->Open->Download and Checkout
  4. Click 'Download and install Laserfiche Office Integration'
  5. Re-install Laserfiche Office Integration from the newly downloaded package

@████████

Thanks Ryan! Yes, I did receive this build from LF Support. I'll follow up with them regarding the pop-up.

@████████Hi Ryan, Happy Holidays! The Chrome pop-up is still appearing with Office Integration 10.4.2.162 (this is the version bundled with the 10.4.2 desktop client). Can you confirm if the new protocol is supposed to be active in this version?

Can you try using Web Scanning once (and download it if prompted)? The download should install the piece that will replace the plugin.

@████████Thanks Miruna, I will try that. Just to confirm the expected behavior, will all our users need to have Web Scanning installed for the new protocol to be active?

Is there a plan for the new protocol to be bundled with Office Integration? Or for Web Scanning to be bundled with the Desktop client install?

The web client is expected to detect that it's missing the new "webtools agent" and prompt the user to install it. However, it looks like, at least in the case where both Scanning and Office are installed through the client install, that detection is not working right. If Scanning or Office are downloaded from the web client, the webtools agent is bundled with them.

The team is looking into it.

As for bundling web scanning with "regular" Laserfiche Scanning, that's not planned. Web Scanning is the lighter-weight scanning experience and is meant to take over as the default in later versions of Laserfiche. These days, a lot of the image enhancements are already done by default on the scanner itself, so most users only need an easy way to bring images into Laserfiche. Given that bandwidth might be a consideration with cloud users, having a smaller installer is preferable. Laserfiche Scanning will still be available for people who need more sophisticated image processing.

Thanks @████████. For organizations like ours where users do not posses admin credentials to install software themselves, what is the best way to go about getting the new webtools agent installed on all computers? Do we need to push out latest version of Web Scanning to all our users or is there another way to go about this?

Also, is there a way to confirm that the new web tools agent is installed other than by opening an office document and seeing if the popup appears?

Hi Henry,

The team's working on a way to facilitate deployment of the Web Tools Agent for situations exactly like this. We don't have a solution yet, but we expect to have one soon and we'll update you when we do.

To confirm if Web Tools Agent is installed, sign into Web Client, then go to Options->Advanced.

Hello Ryan,

I am using WC 10.4.1.35 and I do not see this Laserfiche Webtools Agent showing in Advanced Settings.  I am logged in as LF Admin as well.

Thanks,

Jeff Curtis

@████████, the webtools agent is only available in 10.4.2 and higher for on-premises setups.

@████████ Hi Ryan. Is there an eta on a way to deploy the Webtools agent independently of either Office Integration or Web Scanning?

Also, the web client is currently distributing version 10.4.2.146 of LF Office Integration. This download from the web client is packaged with the new Webtools agent. However, the version of office integration we need to distribute to our users is 10.4.2.162 since it contains an important bug fix. When can we expect the web client to start distributing 10.4.2.162?

Hi Henry,

We're still working on a long term solution for distributing Web Tools Agent. For now, ask your Solution Provider to open a case with Laserfiche Support, and we'll provide a standalone installer for Web Tools.

Web Client should distributing Office Integration 10.4.2.162 later this week, possibly as early as tomorrow afternoon.

Hi,

Was this resolved?  "Laserfiche Web Client 10.4.2 will use a new protocol for launching local plugin applications, like the Laserfiche Office Integration or Laserfiche Desktop Scanning. This new protocol will avoid any pop-up dialogs in all browsers, including Chrome. "

I did not see it mentioned specifically in the List of Changes.

The new protocol, Web Tools Agent, was released with Web Client 10.4.2. If you installed Web Client 10.4.2, you're users should get Web Tools installed on their machine once they update their Scanning or Office Plugin packages.

If they have the latest Scanning and Office plugin installed and they still see the pop up in the original post, an administrator can use the following instructions to distribute Web Tools Agent:

1. On the machine where Web Client is installed, go to: C:\Program Files\Laserfiche\Web Access\Web Files\Webtools

2. Copy LfWebTools.exe

3. paste and install it on your users machines

Hi all,

We released a hotfix for Web Client 10.4.2 that will allow you to download a standalone install package for Webtools Agent. Once Webtools agent is installed locally, users shouldn't see the Chrome prompt in the original post.

To download the installer, go to Options page->Advanced and click 'Download and install Laserfiche Webtools Agent'.
