In Forms, New Print Button doesn't always work

asked on September 23, 2019 Show version history

For LF Support?  We have discovered that the new Print button (Vs 10.4.1.164) on forms steps does not work most of the time.  In testing with our IT, we can report that Google Chrome and Windows Edge are the culprits.  It seems if we test the Print button in Windows IE it seems to always work.  Unfortunately, we cannot find a pattern as to when it will work in Chrome.  We would try ten different examples in Chrome and one out of ten presses on the print button would result in a Print window opening.  Then we would try the same form pages in Windows IE and it would open.   But, sometimes, we would go back to Chrome and forms that we had tried and the Print button would not work, the print button would now work.  No patterns, no rhyme or reason for when it would work.

We tried uninstalling Chrome and reinstalling the latest version.  That did not help.

Does "Ctrl+P" always work for you(open the Print window) with Chrome?

Yes, all the usual print options do work, but result in a very ugly print job.  I believe this is why LF added this print button for people (it was a Feature Request).

Just tested again today and cannot use the new LF provided print button (but, yes, I can print by doing the usual Ctrl+P or right click on the window and choose Print.

Cannot reproduce it, could you please check if there's any js error after you click the print button?

If so, please attach the error and we will do the further trouble shooting.

If not, please try to run

document.getElementById('mainFrame').contentWindow.focus();
document.getElementById('mainFrame').contentWindow.print();

in chrome DevTools Console to see if this script can always work.

Sorry, I have been out of the office for a number of weeks.

Now that I am back, I also cannot reproduce this problem.  I don't know what is different.  We had even made sure we had the latest Chrome installed and so were sure it wasn't that.

There was a new version of Chrome released within the last couple of weeks, so it could be that the new version fixed the issue.

We're on Forms 11 and seeing this issue with some users, both in Chrome and in Edge.  With one user the issue is consistent but with other users it appears to be sporadic.  I notified our SP in case we need to submit a ticket to LF.

I just tested this again in Forms 11. The printer icon does nothing, and the console window only shows that a Mouse Up event occurred.  I tried this as well and it did nothing:

document.getElementById('mainFrame').contentWindow.focus();
document.getElementById('mainFrame').contentWindow.print();

However, I am able to use the printer icon in Firefox and it works consistently.  Unfortunately, Firefox is not a supported browser in our environment so it's not something I can roll out to our users.
