Download Button Disappears for certain users

posted on August 23, 2019

We have an odd situation with Web Link 10.1.0.151.  For a handful of users, the PDF download button does not display itself onscreen when viewing documents.  When the same users view tif files, they do get the print and download controls.  We have tried different browsers, added and removed browser extensions, deleted cookies, cleared the cache, set the default pdf viewer from FoxIt to Adobe, reinstalled Adobe etc. all without any luck.  We can't seem to find anything different about this group - it's about 10 out of a total pool of 40.  All of these users have the Export documents right.

When the same user views the same document in Web Access, they can download - so this seems specific to Web Link.  Has anyone else ever run into this?

Here is the pdf download control appearing normally. It is the black arrow to the lower right.

This user never sees it:

But the same user can download/print tif files:

And can download the same document when using Web Access:

After dealing with a similar issue, I've found that WebLink cannot print/download pdf files that do not have Laserfiche pages associated with them. The reason your problem "auto-magically resolved itself" was likely due to those pages being generated.

It's odd behavior that your cannot export/print a pdf file by itself, but as soon as you generate pages, you can download the pdf and the print option is literally called "Print (as a pdf)".

I'm sure you've moved past this as an issue, but others may come across it when searching for the same problem.

Thanks, Brian.  I tried removing the Laserfiche pages from a pdf document and it still showed me the download button when it displayed the pdf.  However, I would still add this to the list of things to check and test.  Not every situation is the same.

Hi Brian - Web Link is set up using anon access with a Laserfiche account, which has export, print, and search rights.

As an individual, this user can print and download a tif file from Weblink, but not pdf files from the same folder location. Also, the same user can download the same file from Web Access. I'll have her check the Windows client and expect success there also.  Web Link is set up using anon access with a Laserfiche account, which has export, print, and search rights.

The real mystery here is that all users log in via the anon account, but only some of them get the Download PDF icon.

Do those users have the "export" feature right?

Somehow, this issue auto-magically resolved itself.  It had to have been related to the local PC configuration.  That said, the set up outlined above, plus Brian's comment, are the ones to follow any time you come across this problem.
