Question

how to create a new windows account by cloning from an existing windows account

asked on July 30, 2019

In LF 9.1 Administration Console, under Users and Groups, one of the items we have is Windows Accounts.  Can we create a new Windows Account by cloning an existing Windows Account?

We can clone a user under Users and Groups > Users, but we cannot seem to clone Windows Account under Users and Groups > Windows Accounts.

Thanks,

Teng

Windows Accounts are created and maintained in Active Directory, outside of Laserfiche. As such, Laserfiche does not ever create Windows Accounts or modify Active Directory properties (e.g., login name).

The list of Windows Accounts in the admin console is a list of those external users (and groups) that have been added to the administration console user management in Laserfiche so that these users can be granted appropriate security settings and maintain their repository profiles.

Can you explain what you are expecting the "clone" to do? Would you like to copy the settings assigned to User A to a new different user?

Yes, I want to copy settings assigned to User A to a new user.

Do you mean the trustee attributes? In that case, you can open up the user in the Laserfiche admin console. Under Attributes, you can export the users' attributes to an XML file, and then import them to another user's attributes list. You should be specific about which attributes you export, because if you copy all of them across, there could be unintended side effects since many attributes are user or machine specific.

You can check out the specific documentation on exporting attributes.

If you want to copy rights, tags and audit settings, then you should create a group, assign rights to the group and then add these accounts to it.

As a practical matter, anything that you can do at the group level should only be done at the group level. Even if it means you have a group with one person. This saves a lot of pain over time.

Thank you for all the replies.  I will forward the information to the person who is setting up new user.
