Question

LFFTS and LFS in different machine

asked on July 25, 2019

Hi all,

Current setup: The LFFTS and LFS is in one machine.

Desire setup: The LFFTS and SQL in one machine and the LFS in other machine.

Question:

1. If i install the LFFTS in a different machine(LFS in another machine), is there a possibility  that the repository will be re-indexed?

2. How will i configure the above to work as one laserfiche server?

Thanks

Hi Rafael,

You can split the LFFTS server onto a different box than the LFS server. Just select the custom install and untick Laserfiche Full Text and Indexing Service from the LFS server install, and tick only this option on the server where you wish to host LFFTS.

You can then configure accordingly in the admin console. It's actually pretty straight forward.

Give it a go! smiley

Hi Chris,

Thanks for  the prompt reply.

What we are asking for is assurance that the re-indexing will not occur again just like what happened when we upgraded their single machine LF 10.x to single machine LF 10.4. The re-indexing took almost one month to finish. Users were not able to use the system.

Will the re-indexing occur again if we proceed with the planned separation of LFFTS and LFS?

Hoping for your prompt reply.

Hi Rafael,

No you won't need to re-index to relocate LFFTS. You can just detach and move the catalog (the IDX files in the SEARCH folder).

Hope this helps!

Hi Rafael,

What issue are you trying to address by moving LFFTS to a different server? I would strongly recommend against putting LFFTS and SQL on the same server for a Production system. Both applications are resource intensive in similar ways and will compete for CPU and RAM. LFFTS doesn't communicate with SQL so there's not even a network performance benefit to hosting them together.

You mentioned having a re-indexing job that took a month so I'm assuming this is a sizable system.

Hi @Chris and @Samuel,

I have a question regarding the re-indexing during a version update.

May questions,

There is a way to avoid the re-indexing process during the version update?

Why need to re-index when updating to new version?

Where to find a white paper's that saying need to re-index during an update to a new version?

Thank you

Hi Rafael,

Yes you can defer the upgrade, it's one of the options as part of the upgrade.

The LFFTS catalogue is optimised during an upgrade, and changes to suit the LFFTS version. There are sometimes also specific fixes for LFFTS catalogues which would be applied as part of the re-index.

I've never seen a white paper specifically for upgrading, I guess this would be quite difficult to put together as it would change for every minor/major upgrade.

Cheers!

Hi Rafael,

During the LFFTS upgrade section of the install, there is a drop down, which lets you pick whether to re-index, upgrade, or defer any actions.

Cheers!

Hi Chris,

Can you give some images of where to find it?

Thanks

Hey Rafael,

I don't to hand, but I'll get a screenshot during the next upgrade. It's fairly obvious when you get there.

Cheers!

Hi Chris,

Please see this attachment, I already updated our var laptop but I don't see the option as you said.

Thanks

Hey Rafael,

It isn't an option on every version upgrade, only when required, I'm not exactly sure on when it's required, I haven't seen it for a few versions now, Laserfiche might have to offer some insight into when the LFFTS requires upgrading between which versions.

When I performed that operation in Version 9 moving LFFTS to a new server it performed a re-index on my whole repository.

It was done by VAR at the time they had told me that it wouldn't happen but it did. Lucky for us at the time we had small repository and the new server had a lot of horse power and the re-index only took about 3 hours to complete.

Hi Ivan,

you do not need to re-index unless you’re changing version. Or if you’ve done something wrong. You can detach and reattach the catalog without reindexing. I think in your case it may have been a mistake by the var or you have changed lfs.exe version.

Hi All,

When i try to re-attach the search folder of LFFTS from the new server to the old server were it come from i get an error. "The search engine encountered an internal error. Please check the search engine error log for more details. [9132]".

Hope for some one to teach me how to solve this error.

Thanks,

Ah ok, sounds like you've hit something a bit more complex than what we can discuss on an open forum. I would suggest either re-creating your text catalogue as a quick fix, or opening a case with Laserfiche support and they can troubleshoot this further with you.

how to re-create the search catalog or  text catalog?

Click create here instead of attach.

Then click yes when prompted to start a re-index.

What about may previous search folder where the search catalog is in, can i transfer it?

The search catalog can completely re-generate, you can re-create the whole thing from scratch as it uses the LF volumes to re-build the catalog. I would go for a re-index (re-create) if you're having issues with attach and detach. There is a helpful guide here if you are looking for something step by step. https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1011970/regenerating-a-repositorys-search-idx-files
