Event Viewer Error clarification ID:172

asked on July 10, 2019

We're getting repeated errors on the repo server of a client. The errors have come to our attention as we're looking in to regular problems with the indexing service on the same server. I've had a look and outside of a similar-ish error when Workflow is using unvalidated credentials, I can't see much information about this error. Can anyone shed a bit of light on it?

I've had this error before and it was caused by storing the Search files on a Windows DFS file share and they get locked by DFS and the Search Index service cannot access them.  If you go into the administration console and go to the Index item for the repository, then double click on the Indexing Status, it will probably give you an error Invalid Search Catalog Status (9421).  The temporary fix is to detach the search catalog then attach it and things will run again.

Long term fix is to move the Search Index files to a non DFS drive and point the search index to the new location.
