Looking for some best practices in moving data for Rio.

asked on May 17, 2019

Looking for the some best practices in moving data for Rio. My client has 4TB of data and files. All we want to do is move to a larger storage drive. I have been given several ways of doing it. I have been told all I need to do is create a new volume, point LF to the new drive location and mark the old volume as read only.  I have been given a couple of other suggestions. Hoping someone might have be able to suggest the best method to either move all the data to a new drive or create a new volume and mark the prior one as read only. What are some of the best practices you are using for migrating large volumes of data?

How big is the new drive? Based on our experience and recommendations from Laserfiche, I would not recommend using any single drive larger than 4TB to avoid issues with backup/recovery strategies.

In our environment, we have multiple drives (4TB each) and when a drives gets to about 90% capacity, we just point the Logical volume at a new drive.

With logical volumes, you can have one volume spread across multiple drives, even on different servers, which is how we've done things for several years (we have over 26TB).

At that point, you can point the Logical volume at any drive. The "current" location of the logical is used each time it rolls over to a new physical volume, and you can move the existing around wherever you want with the admin console.

For example, we have one Logical volume comprised of many 20GB physical volumes that roll over automatically, those smaller volumes spread across different drives. Changes to the Logical volume don't affect the existing physical volumes, they're applied on the next roll over.

Something to consider with setting a volume to read only is that this doesn't just prevent new additions to the volume, it also prevent changes to existing documents.
