The documentation for Link Group security says the following:

Indicating that a document is a new member of a link group does not require special permissions. A user with the Browse and Read entry access right for the document can specify that a document is a member of a particular link group. In order for a user to remove a document from a link group, he or she will need the Write Metadata entry access right on the document that will no longer be a link group member.

This is true in the desktop client. However, the web client doesn't allow you to see the link groups until Write Metadata is given. As it is, it would be nice to have a true read-only experience when Write Metadata is not set. If set the permissions so that users can see the Link Groups in the web client, it's a little better. The issue then is that the list of Link Groups is a bit hard to read. Is there a chance that we can get a more compact view, with a toggle to show the rest?
