I would assume that after you do a lookup, you are passing the variable to a meta data field that is not the right data type. For instance passing a date value to a number field, or text to a date field. You have to make sure that the data types of the fields are the same and for text for instance that the length of both fields is the same so that the data won't be concatenated.
