Calculating number of days outstanding using calendar inputs

Hi there, I have a 'submission date' and an 'action item assigned date' that I want to calculate the 'number of days outstanding'. Is there a way I can do this using Java?

I used the DATEDIF() formula to calculate the number of days between two date fields:
