Problem launching Word from Web Client IFrame

posted on March 19, 2019 Show version history

Hi ,

I have an issue that has surfaced recently, so I am suspecting is an issue with recent browser updates as I have used this functionality in the past without problems.

When I try to launch a MS Word document from within a web client IFrame (see screenshot) Word fails to launch.  I can launch from outside an IFrame (i.e. in the native Web Client browser window) but then the user will need to open two separated windows.

I suspsect it is a security thing as there is an error in Chrome DevTools that says:

"Unchecked runtime.lastError: The message port closed before a response was received."

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered and maybe solved this one?

many thanks,

Ian

Fixing this would be VERY helpful.

(I understand you're probably already on it, but I thought I'd raise the profile of the question a bit.)

Hi Ian,

This is a known issue in Web Client 10. Chrome/Firefox block the technology we use to launch local plugins like Office Integration or Laserfiche Web Scanning when Web Client is embedded in an iframe for security reasons. This happens specifically when Web Client and the containing page are installed on different machines within the same domain.

If you're using Web Client version 10.4, you can work around this by using the Laserfiche Document Preview Service  (LDPS) to display the Office file in the Doc Viewer. Note that LDPS doesn't support editing. If you have an on-premises Office Online server, you can use are Office Online integration to view or edit Office Files from the doc viewer.

Looking forward, we're working on a new technology for launching local plugins. This technology should bypass the issue here and allow you to launch Office Integration or Web Scanning even when Web Client is embedded in an iframe.

Thanks for the detailed answer Ryan, I look forward to the new technology.

Through further browser testing we have now established that it will work with Microsoft Edge, after a prompt about switching applications, which will have to be the work-around for now.

regards,

Ian

Any sort of rough timeline on when this new technology may roll out?

I am curious as to why it works 80%-90% of the time, but then all of a sudden stops working?
