Migrate data to physical volume within logical volume

asked on March 7, 2019

We use logical volumes to automatically create physical volumes on January 1st of each year.  This is to keep items sorted by year for what are considered Daily Work items in Banks and Credit Unions.  This allows them purge things annually that have fixed retention rules from date of creation.  So we create a logical volume called Daily Work and then they don’t have to create a new volume each year.

We used to do this manually each year by creating new physical volumes each year.  (Daily 2017, Daily 2018, Daily 2019, etc.).  On rare occasions something gets scanned later and they want to migrate it to the previous years volume.  With physical volumes that is simple.

I have a customer asking me now how to do that into the physical volumes in a logical volume.  They would like to migrate something to a previous years physical volume because it was not scanned in the right year.  Is that even possible?

Still curious about this, but another option would be to make a Physical volume of a logical volume its own stand-alone volume.  Is this possible?  In the below image the client would like to migrate data to the Daily2018 Volume.  Without creating a new volume and migrating to that, is there a way to accomplish this or move Daily2018 out so it is its own volume?
