Question

Bypass the Edit or View option in the Web Client

asked on February 14, 2019

We have a search hyperlink for files in the 10.3.1 Web Client that will by design only return one result.  We want that result to export automatically, the returned electronic file is to only be viewed in a 3rd party viewer and will not need to have edit rights.  The documentation reports that the end user will be given the choice to open the file with Edit or View rights and it is absolutely correct the window pops up every time.  Is there an action that can be added to the end of the URL to bypass the pop up window?

If there isn't an action, is there a search syntax that will work with electronicfile.aspx?  We can not use the entry ID as part of the URL as it changes every day due to an occasional file corruption issue that we have not been able to resolve.  If we create a test electronicfile.aspx URL using the entry ID it does bypass the user option pop up.

Here is a copy of one of the current URLs.  Everything works great except for the Edit/View/Cancel pop up window being an extra click.

Hi Brian,

We actually removed the View/Edit dialog and revamped the document open logic in Web Client 10.4.0. In 10.4, the Web Client will default to opening a preview of the office file in the doc viewer. You can change settings to open in Office files in the Office Plugin or download by default if you prefer.

That said, there isn't a way to set search URL to download when only one result is returned. It makes sense for our one-result-search behavior to follow our open document options and I filed an enhancement to do exactly that. That way, if your settings open or download Office files by default, one-result searches will download the file as well.

For your reference, the ID for this request is: 156071.
