Deleting fields that has been assigned to an entry

asked on January 30, 2019

We had a question from a client, where when they assigned a field to an entry and write value to it, either on its own or within a template, they are able to delete the assigned field within the administration console or web client management with no warning whatsoever. Whereas if a tag has been assigned to an entry, administration console refuses to let the administrator delete the tag and warns that it has been assigned to an entry. They are slightly worried the administrator might accidentally delete a field even when it has been assigned to an entry without their knowledge.

Is there an intention behind this design? Is there anyway to warn the administrator that the field has been assigned to an entry before deletion? If not, is it possible to raise a feature request? Thanks.

That doesn't sound like normal behavior. I've deleted fields and it does show a warning message stating when the field is in use.

The user is presented with information on the field when attempting to delete it:

I think what the client actually prefer is to prevent field from being deleted altogether if it has been assigned to an entry, similar to tag behavior, or at least let them know whether the field has been assigned to an entry or not (not just to templates). Anyway I will let them know there is already a warning message in place and administrator must take more care before deleting a field. Thanks.
