Question

Unable to send password reset emails for users

asked on January 16, 2019

Hello all. We're unable to trigger password reset emails from LFDS on our server. When we click the link under 'Password' in LFDS for a particular user, we get the error 'Default mail server or mail template not set (LMO44)'.

Here are two screenshots. We've configured a server and can send test emails through it. We also have a template configured, but how do we set the defaults for use with the user password resets?

Here are two screenshots. Thank you as always for your help.

You should be safe to update those fields, and the fields can easily be changed back if need be.

Hi Chad,

The default email server and template for an organization can be set under the desired organization's "Settings" tab.

Hi Chase Hill, thank you. Is the option located in the LF Admin Console? I'm having some trouble locating it.

The options are located in the Directory Server web interface. You can find them for the organization '(Root)' by going to Accounts > Organizations > (Root) > Settings. On that tab you will find drop-down lists for selecting a default email server and template.

Hello Chase and Chad,

Chad-I just sent you an email on my findings that resolved the issue and I was able to send a PW Reset email successfully.

Chase- I have a configuration question for this.  Chad had set up the Email Server and Email Template correctly for this PW reset.

In order to make this work, I had to go into Accounts->Organization->Root->Settings and change both Server and Templates from INHERIT to use the specific Email Server and Template, Chad Configured.

Shouldn't INHERIT pick up those settings.

As I stated, once I changed these the reset email test worked.

Thanks,

Jeff Curtis

I think you answered my question- You need to select them correct?

(Root) by default will have its email server and template settings set to "Inherit". This means that (Root) does not know which email server or template to use until they are selected on its settings page (as Root is the top level organization and cannot inherit any settings). So yes, you do need to initially change the settings on (Root) to use your desired email server and template.

Once you have selected the server and template for (Root), any organization below it will use the same server and template because the default "Inherit" settings will inherit those properties from (Root).

I do think this behavior is not the clearest, and it will likely be changed in the near future.

Hi Chase and Jeff,

Progress! Thank you. After the above changes, we're getting the pw reset emails from the server now, but the links within the emails to reset the pw won't resolve because they're pointing at the local Windows server name in the URL like so:

https://cdlf0000/LFDSSTS/ResetPassword?whr=urn%3...

We aren't an Active Directory shop here and don't operate our own DNS, so we can't access the server's resources by Windows hostname instead of the FQDN. How can we set the links to refer to the server's FQDN of https://cdlf0000.contoso.com/LFDSSTS/ResetPassword?whr=urn%3... so our end users can reach it?

Navigate to your Directory Server install folder (Default: C:\Program Files\Laserfiche\Directory Server). In that folder you will find the XmlEndpointUtility application. When you run it, you should see the section labeled "Laserfiche User Password Reset Configuration". Is your fully qualified domain name being used in the "Primary security token service" field?

No it isn't. Right now it shows the local windows hostname under General Configuration 'Fully qualified domain name (host.domain.com), under laserfiche User Password Reset Configuration 'Primary security token service) and in 'Approved security token services'.

This is a production server. Do you think we're safe to update each of those fields to reflect the FQDN instead of the Windows hostname?
