Question

Generate PDF from Word document in Workflow

asked on December 10, 2018

Is there a way to convert a Word document to a PDF in Workflow? I've seen how to create a Word document from a PDF using the "Update Word Document" activity, and send this document via Email. What I really need instead of a Word document though, is a PDF. If I could get a multi-page TIFF, that might work as a substitute, but PDF would be idea.

You can use Update Word Document. It will convert the Word doc to PDF even if no fields are set to be merged. You'll need to download the document from the repository, then use it in Update Word Document.

Thank you! I tried it and there it was, hiding in plain sight, I just had to click the gear icon to see those fields.

I tried to replicate this workflow but I must be missing something. After the 'Update Word Document', I don't have a Result File, just the Starting Entry. I set it to save as PDF okay but the Starting Entry stays as a docx.

You mean when you try to attach the PDF to the email? If so, you need to change the attachment type from "Entry" to "File".

Hi Miruna,

With either the Move Entry or Email function, I only had the option to attach the Starting Entry. There was no Result File from the Update Word Document. In the end I added the Attach Electronic Document and attached it to the starting entry

For Move Entry that makes sense. The updated Word document is not an entry in Laserfiche.

This was very helpful, wish I would have found this sooner! Having the ability to convert a Word document to PDF and then into a .tiff is so helpful! We use powerpack (from MCCi) in Workflow to convert the pdf to .tiff. (Laserfiche pages)

How are you bring the documents into the repository? If you have TIFF pages generated for the documents, you could use a Workflow SDK Script to generate a PDF and attach it back to the document, but I've never tried going straight from .doc/.docx to PDF.
