Multiples within a multi-value group

posted on November 12, 2018

I have a situation where I am dealing with families where one mother can have multiple children and multiple fathers.  I thought I could manage this with grouping multi-value fields but I'm not getting the result I need.  Here's what I'm looking for.

Mother:  Jane Doe

Father: Jim Smith

            His Children: Sam

                                  Joe

Father #2: Larry Green

            His Child: Sarah

Father #3: Bob Brown

             His Children: Mary

                                  Sue

                                  Larry

                                  David

Once I group the father and child fields the child isn't muti-value on its own.

Is there a way around this or am I just asking too much?
Thanks,

Sandy

It sounds like the solution you are thinking of requires tables inside tables (which aren't supported).  One alternative would be to have children be the primary entity, and list the parents for each child.  So more like:

Sam | Jane Doe | Jim Smith

Mary | Jane Doe | Bob Brown

Also, from a data design perspective, make sure you aren't building in constraints that won't cover all of your scenarios.  Will you need to handle kids having 2 moms or 2 dads?
