Question

Losing hyperlinks in Adobe PDF documents

asked on October 29, 2018

Hi,

I have been advised that the work around is not to store documents in Laserfiche but we regularly get legal documents that are PDF that have 100+ links to other pdf documents. Also advised it is an Adobe issue not a Laserfiche issue given it does same in Internet Explorer

We only became a client this year and are currently migrating 2 million documents hence wondering if there is alternative option until LF sort this out

Problem

Index.pdf (story of the loan ) has hyperlinks to 100+ pdf's totalling 500mb of documents.

1. Open in Adobe...all fine

2. Copy files to LF, Open in Adobe (not pages or Internet Explorer) and links are gone. On saving the documents I am assuming it is breaking all hyperlinks

Hi Paul,

Hyperlinks not working with PDF's is noted in the release notes https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1013948/release-notes-for-laserfiche-10-3-1

  • When viewing a PDF in the Folder Browser's Document Preview Pane or the Document Viewer's Electronic File Pane, hyperlinks in the PDF may not work. (94419)

As you've noted this is a limitation of Adobe, not Laserfiche, as you observe the same behviour when opening a PDF in Internet Explorer.

I'm not entirely sure what Laserfiche can do about this issue. The solution to this issue will not come from Laserfiche.

I believe the issue needs to be resolved by Laserfiche whether that is through working with Adobe or Microsoft to find a solution to document Linking.

This is a limitation of Laserfiche as Adobe has the functionality as does basic MS Office documents.

By putting a document into LF you don't expect it to lose functionality when you open it again. That in itself is pretty concerning when a core advantage is to move the repository away from windows explorer. Businesses have been connecting documents together for decades (in terms of Excel/Word)

Thank you for the release notes.  In the small print I noted

"When viewing a PDF in the Folder Browser's Document Preview Pane or the Document Viewer's Electronic File Pane, hyperlinks in the PDF may not work. (94419)" but as you can imagine, telling my client to use LF as the repository apart from the documents that have links in them wont go down well

Thanks for clarifying Paul. Will await feedback from Laserfiche on this.
