Getting error I can't make sense of when merging this morning

Trying to merge 2 text fields of length 40 into one. I get this error

 

I go to the repository, and I search

 

No entries use both of these fields, and no template contains both of these fields.

What does this message mean?

Any chance that there are security tags in the repository that have not been granted to the user you logged in as in the Client to run the search?

Are you running the search as a user with Manage Entry Access (so you can see all documents in the repository)?

I am running the search as the built in Admin account with all access granted. They do not use security tags but it is possible for them to remove inherited rights, would that make it impossible to find?
