Hi Everyone,

Much of the material on the web about bar codes generally recommends:

  • QR for smaller barcodes when storing larger amounts of data (less wastage on error correction). They look nicer and can also be decorated.
  • Data Matrix for generally smaller barcodes, when storing a smaller amounts of data (they fit nicely in address windows of envelopes)
  • Aztec barcodes for items that are likely to be printed on home and low-quality printers. They are used for airline and concert tickets.

In practice, are printed data matrix and QR so unreliable? I've had lots of trouble with code39 when an ink jet printed barcode bleeding, or glossy code39 codes failing to read because of cracks in the print. I have had far fewer issues with 2d codes.

These days, I often put JSON in the bar codes. Laserfiche Workflow can't create Aztec codes yet but perhaps it should. Aspose's bar code software does support Aztec (but may not be part of the Laserfiche license).
