Question

Forms Exported Business Process Version Compatability

asked on October 3, 2018

I have Forms 10.3.0.975 in my personal DEV VM that I have developed a BP in for a client. I did not upgrade Forms as I did not want to create a compatibility issue when importing into their Forms version which as it turns out is 10.3.1.552. I also have BPs for another project that are in another Forms Version 10.3.1.635 VM. If I try to upload it into my Forms version it throws an error when uploading as shown. I assume this is a version compatibility issue.

◄To resolve this I was going to upgrade forms to 10.3.1.635. The issue is that I don't want to make my prior dev BPs incompatible with the other client's 10.3.1.552. environment as this would be a disaster if I cannot upload the work from my DEV to the aforementioned client with .552.

SO the question I believe is: do I need to upgrade to the earlier 10.3.1.552 or is any version of a Forms 10.3.1 BP uploadable into any other that is also 10.3.1 regardless of the sub release version (.552) being earlier or later than the Forms versio it's exported from? Also when you upgrade forms does it automatically upgrade all BPs to the newer Forms version installed ?

In Todd's case, the issue is a bug with Forms that will be fixed in 10.4
The BUG ID for reference is 90299

The good news is that there is a hotfix for the issue.

UPDATE: Earlier I made a blanket statement that you can only import a process from 10.3.1.lower to 10.3.1.higher, but this isn't always true. I tested it with 10.3.1.635 and successfully imported into 10.3.1.526 (a dev build I had on hand). There are no guarantees that 10.3.1.higher will import into 10.3.1.lower, but in many cases, if there aren't major schema changes to the database or new features, the import from higher to lower will succeed. If the import succeeds, you are good to go with the process.

That said, Forms does not officially support 10.3.1.higher into 10.3.1.lower in all cases.

You can only import a process from 10.3.1.lower into 10.3.1.higher.

And to your second question, yes, when you install a newer version of Forms, all of the processes are upgraded to the new installation level, so you wouldn't be able to then download them and send them back to the previous version.

Can I just ask then where one might find an earlier 10.3.1.552 version of Forms to download?

Thanks,

Contact LF Support. They can get you an older release build

You should be able to just remove the update. In Control Panel > Program and Features > View Installed Updates, you can find the update corresponding to Forms 10.3.1 update 1 (10.3.1.635) and remove it. You do not need to contact Laserfiche Support in order to obtain releases.

Hi Jared,

I tried uploading a .635 BP into Professional Version 10.3.1.553 and it threw error "An unexpected error has occurred. [LFF502-UnexpectedError]". Any thoughts as why and if there are other possible causes for this error other than version. I can say that uploading an earlier version BP did work. I am trying to do DEV work on the newer BP but not jeopardize compatibility for my other client that has the earlier version.

Thanks for any ideas you may have.

I tried importing another simple process from b635 to b553 and it imported successfully. To troubleshoot, I would try making a very simple process in b635 and attempting to import it into b553. If that fails, there may be another issue at hand.

More likely, something in your process isn't compatible going from the higher build to the lower build, so the import isn't supported.

Sorry - just realized that the client's environment was just upgraded by a colleague in the course of his work so that should resolve my issue in this instance.

Thanks anyway.
