Question

Custom Text Box placement by Workflow

asked on September 26, 2018

Working on a design to use text boxes to show approvals with date/time to be placed on a standardized Requisition form as it goes through the sign-off process.

I understand the X and Y coordinates in the Custom Placement section of the Text Box properties.  But the coordinates are not consistent for different boxes to be able to line them up.

QUESTION: What is the logic behind the X/Y coordinates??

I'm using the same X coordinate of 1025 for all the Approval lines, but they're all over the place as far as lining up the same.  See the first screenshot of the resulting placement, where all the lines have the same X=1025 coordinate but different left justification

Also, depending on the length of the text line, the box can change location, too.

Any ideas?

The coordinates are for the center of the annotation. If the box would flow off the image due to the lenght of the text, it's shifted slightly to the left or up in order for it to fit completely on the image.

"The coordinates are for the center of the annotation".  That one sentence is the key to the entire question of custom location by coordinates.

I was able to come up with a solution by using the "Append Text" selection from the Merging Option.

I figured out where the center of the maximum appended text would be, X=870 and Y=2605, and used that as the coordinates for ALL the Text Box fields to Append Text into, and came up with the final result below.

The X-axis (left to right) is also affected by what results in the longest text line.  If I remove the 3rd line above, which is the longest, the entire box moves to the right.

The first text box annotation looks like this:

Then it grows the box from the center - up and down, and to the left according to length of text line.

Why don't you setup a read only field for end users, and capture these timestamps? At the end of the process, you can just take the information in this field and apply it as a single stamp?

Tommy, thanks for the good idea.  I see that there is an "Append" option under the Merging Options for the Text Box option.  I will play with this, and see how things look as appended and post back here for future reference.  Specifically on your thoughts about a read-only field to capture timestamps, can you explain that, as that is a new idea to me.

I am still hoping to receive a declarative statement from Laserfiche regarding how the justification/location works with the X/Y coordinates.
