Audit Table(s) Size

posted on September 14, 2018 Show version history

I was wondering why my Laserfiche Licensing database for Directory Server (10.3.0.11) was getting so large so I ran a report and noticed millions of records in the audit tables.  I don't even have that large of a deployment.  Is there a way from the Directory Server configuration to store less less audit data or purge some data?

Also my Directory Server is very, very slow when navigating around the web interface.  I've never been able to pinpoint the cause of the slowness.

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Miruna,

We have a 10.3 customer also experiencing slowness and after checking the LFDS audit tables advised in this article their audit tables had grown to 80GB+ as the pruning operation had stopped working.

They have been able to confirm the table size is the issue by unchecking all LFDS Event logging options, however they still want to shrink or delete the audit table records to 1 or 2GB.

1. Can you please provide a SQL query to reduce the LFDS audit tables to a manageable size?

or

2. Can Laserfiche dev team advise an alternate method to fix the db pruning when audit event logging is re-enabled?

many thanks

Warren Cook

Hi Warren, I recommend opening a support case for this so we can give you some scripts and instructions to wipe out all the audit data in the database (audit data on disk will still remain and can be deleted at will).

Once the audit tables are small again, make sure that Trim Audit Reporting Data is turned on and is only retaining the time range that you need. If it's configured properly and is still not trimming anything, we can look into that as well.

Thanks Alexander.  I skimmed through all of the settings.  I must have overlooked this one.  Much appreciated.

Hi Rob,

From the LFDS settings page, you can able the option to trim audit reporting data and then specify how much data to keep in the database, how often to trim, etc.

Hi Alex,

We enabled this option for a customer with about 600 users, but it MDF size for LFDS database did not shrink.  We even tried running the shrink process within SQL Management Studio on the database, but did not see a difference.

How long did you wait for deletion to happen? Did the number of rows in the database change?

The MDF file's size on disk will not shrink on its own, it needs to be shrunk from SQL Mgmt Studio (SQL will free up the disk as rows are deleted, but, because expansion operations tend to be expensive, it will not release the unused space).

Miruna,

We had this option enabled for almost a week no and see no changes.  Shrinking the MDF does not help either as shown below.  Also, when running an audit in LFDS, data dated back to when the initial installation still shows up.

Is this full SQL or SQL Express?

Originally LFDS was on SQL Express, but then the customer upgraded to full SQL.
