Feature Request: Granular Weekend Rules for Workflow Holidays

posted on August 23, 2018 Show version history

Hello,

In configuring our observed holidays I've run into a bit of a challenge because the only options for when a holiday lands on a weekend are to move it to the next business day, the previous business day, or ignore it altogether.

However, with some US holidays the observed date actually depends on the specific day of the weekend on which the holiday lands.

For example, if July 4 lands on a Saturday, our observed date is July 3rd (the previous business day), but if it lands on a Sunday the observed date is July 5th (the next business day).

As a result, we cannot configure some holidays to work reliably every year and have had to revisit them each year to verify that these holidays are being handled correctly for that calendar year.

What I think would be helpful is the option to choose between the current approach of a universal weekend rule or to set multiple rules that would apply different options based on specific days of the weekend.

I know there are a lot of other Government and Education users out there, so I imagine there's a lot of people who could benefit from this change; I wouldn't say it is a "major" issue, but it would be a nice quality of life enhancement.

UPDATE: After giving it some more thought, another option that may be easier to implement would be to add one more choice for "nearest business day" which would look both back and forward to see which business day is closest to the designated date.

Our institution would also benefit from this feature. I would also think that any Financial Institution or workplace that observes Federal Holidays would find it useful.

Jason explained his workaround on my above post.
