Hey Robyn,

Some organizations use Laserfiche for physical records management or other scenarios where they may need metadata about something without it being an actual document in the repository. So that option allows them to essentially create a placeholder document that can be used to assign searchable metadata, perhaps referencing something outside the system. You're correct that it's a very specific use-case, which is why it's not a more prominent option.

All that said, we will be expanding the new document functionality in the 10.4 web client and allowing people to create a new word, excel, or powerpoint document directly from the folder browser. This would launch office with the new document already saved to that location within the repository.

I should note that we did, in fact, add that in 10.4. smiley

Hi Robyn,

The feature can also be used to create configuration documents. For example, in many organisations any change to a workflow needs to go through lots of change control. However if you can store some logic (a list of email addresses, or enstryID for a PDF process) in the metadata of a "configuration document", then changes often come under "configuration" not "development" and require less change control.
