Laserfiche License Activation Problem

Wondering if anyone can help with this issue:

We have Laserfiche Server installations in a different Windows Domain and off-site to the LFDS.  During the Laserfiche Server (10.2) Setup wizard, there is an opportunity to "Activate using the Laserfiche Rio Directory Server".

We select this option, enter the public FQDN of the Rio Directory Server and enter credentials for "Another user".  The credentials we are using are for a valid LFDS user and we have tried various formats (DOMAIN\User, just User, user@domain). We get an error "Setup could not establish a connection with the specified Rio Directory Server. Please check your server name and credentials."

I have taken a packet trace at both the client and LFDS.  I see a HTTP GET request on port TCP/5048 for uri:

GET /lflicmgr/options

The LFDS responds with HTTP 401 Unauthorized.

So it definitely feels like an authentication issue; but I can't see any logs to help me diagnose.

Is it something silly like the client must be in the same windows domain?

See this white paper. The domain the Directory Server is in needs to trust the domain the Laserfiche Server is in.
