Question

Web Client - Printing Multiple Documents

asked on August 14, 2018

Hi,

In the Windows Client, it is possible to select multiple entries and then print those entries with a single action. In the Web Client, each individual document is opened in a separate tab, which can result in a much longer process to print the documents.

Is there an alternative way to print multiple documents, either search results or when browsing the folder structure?

In the Windows Client, if you highlight the documents you want to print, then click the Print toolbar button or right-click and select Print, it allows you to print multiple documents.

EDIT: Looks like you can print multiples in the Web Client too.

Check the boxes next to each of the documents you want, then select Print from the ellipsis menu (it will tell you how many were selected and ask what format to use).

Hi Jason,

I think you've misunderstood, after you then select 'Print', a tab is opened for each of the documents you have selected, each of which then need to be printed individually.

Gotcha, I hadn't actually gone that far. It sounds like the web client won't do what you want, but the Windows client will.

This is a fundamental limitation of printing through a web browser. It's just not really set up for that.

Just curious - what's your processes that requires you to print out a lot of documents at once?

Justin,

We have the same issue.  If a customer wants copies of multiple documents, it takes a more effort than necessary to accomplish in the Web Client.  For instance to print 4 documents, I cannot get it to less than 16 mouse click/keyboard commands. Are there any shortcuts at all for printing multiple documents from the web client?

As noted above, this is basically a limitation of printing in web browsers, where we basically just have to submit these to the browser to print as separate items. That said, we are looking into alternative methods such as attempting to temporarily combine everything into one document under the hood so it just has to tell the browser to print for one item, not for 4 different ones. Can't commit to anything on that one yet though, or if it's even possible.

We have a legacy process that uses PDF tools like iTextSharp (which I believe Laserfiche is already using) to merge multiple PDFs into a single PDF, so in theory it should be possible with some back end functionality.

As another example, our Case Management System has a "Bulk Print" option in the web interface that does exactly what you're describing; it combines them all into one PDF that is then returned to the user for printing.

Just food for thought!

Hi, Justin

I have a request from a customer about what would be the best method to print multiple documents at once from the Web Client (v10.4). You mentioned above that you were looking for alternative methods to do so, so I thought I would ask if you have had any success. In this particular use case the users would like to be able to print multiple pictures at once using the Web Client.

Thank you!

Rob
