How to run helper functions to clear up space

posted on August 10, 2018

As a question regarding this post about migrating and clearing up space, after waiting 3 hours from a migration to a new volume for the files to be removed from the old volume I found this post indicating it takes day/weeks to do this. Is there any faster method?

How do you have maintenance windows configured on your repository?

We have a cleanup workflow that runs each week to apply retention policies to some of our documents. Once a week it purges about 150-200GB documents from the repository and we usually see the free space the next day after the repository maintenance cycle has run.

We are purging documents versus migrating to a different volume, so I'm not sure it is the same thing, but I thought I woudl provide some insight into our experience with volume cleanup.

We can run the migration immediately, with workflow or any other method. The problem is that when migrating only a copy of the document is created on the new drive, the helper functions take an indeterminate amount of time to actually remove the files from the old volume's drive.

The migration runs immediately, but what I was curious about is the repository maintenance configuration because that is what seems to handle the actual cleanup of the volumes.

Perhaps your maintenance window is too narrow so it only has enough time to clean up a small portion each night resulting in the long delay.
