Size limit on Comments box in Forms

asked on July 31, 2018

There seems to be a size limit on the Comments box in Forms. How do I remove the size restriction please? Thanks.

Along the same lines, can we increase the number of characters in the Comments box in Forms 10.3?

Thanks

It would appear very unlikely that such a feature would be possible. It all depends on your application on how you are using the comments as to how easy a workaround is.

I am very interested in increasing the comment box character limits.  Our legal team is using Forms to replace email correspondence.  They are requested that we increase the character limit to 1000 characters.  They want to see all comments in the action history.  Their comments can be a little longer than 500 characters.  Do you ever think that the character limit can be changeable?  I would like to request that this be controllable by an admin in the settings of forms.

But why? There is a pretty good chance you are using the comment box in the wrong way and what you could want to do could be done in a much better, smarter designed manner.

I am aware of how the comment box works.  Not only am I a user but I was also a VAR.  Our Legal Team is using a Business Process to Correspond with Contract Specialist regarding Contracts they are needing to approve.  In the past this has been done through email.  They now want it all in one place for auditing purposes.  Attorneys are a little more wordy than most and we would only be increasing this process not any other at this time.  We have explained that the reason it is limited is because this comment appears in the action history which is exactly where they want it to be.  They do not care how long the action history is as long as the comments are all in one area and at the end of the process that it can be captured for future reference.  The action history is on the first page before the form when it Is filed in Laserfiche.  This is more reason for them to want to increase the box.

But that is the point: what you want to use the comment box for is not the purpose that the comment box has been designed for, nor is it the role that it serves. An ironing board is not a surf board, however keen the individual is on using it as such, it will not perform the same.

You can recreates the vertical comment stream that is on the side of the page easily with CSS and have complete control of the length and limitations from there. Unless there was a very specific reason to have it in the action history, having it in-process will serve the same requirements.
