Question

Opening LF to Search View as a default

asked on July 26, 2018

Hello,

This is an add-on to a previous question,

https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/96753/Is-there-an-attribute-to-default-to-search-pane-when-opening-the-Client#96758

I tried this by setting the attribute to = '3' in both the user and Everyone, and still the LF client opens in with the folder view on the left.  Do you know what else I need to try in order to have LF default to open on the search view?

I do know about the 'save pane layout' option, but this seems like a better option.

Make sure the attribute [Settings]RememberLeftPane is FALSE. If it doesn't exist, then it's FALSE by default.

Then, set [Settings]InitialView to 3.

For future reference, attributes like these are documented here. (The current docs say that [Settings]RememberLeftPane has to be TRUE in order for [Settings]InitialView to work, but that's inaccurate and will be fixed.)

Leif,

Your answer was very helpful and now LF is opening up on the Search pane automatically.

When I first checked the RememberLeftPane attribute it was set to 'No'.  I changed that to False and it did not work.  I set the attribute to True and it did work.  I wonder if my version (10.1), is different than yours and at some point this was changed.

Thank you so much for the quick response.

Oh, oops. I didn't take account of a conflicting setting when I was testing how the two attributes interacted. I'm glad you figured it out anyway.

Hello,

After more testing I am still not getting the results I am looking for.  I set Everyone to RememberLeftPane = True and InitialView =3.  I then removed these attributes for all users.  This works when opening Laserfiche, however if a user changes their view, then the next time Laserfiche opens it opens to the new view, not the Search view (3).  What else do I need to do to get this to work each time a  user opens Laserfiche - they default to the search view.

Unfortunately, I encountered the same behavior with my testing. What happens is that when a user changes the pane configuration, that also changes the value of InitialView, so that it's no longer 3. @████████ is there a way around this?

Attributes of this sort on the everyone group only take effect as defaults - that is, once the user has set their own attributes, those will overwrite. There are some situations where administrators can overwrite those and lock down the settings (https://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/10/en-US/administration/#../Subsystems/LFAdmin/Content/settings-lockdown.htm), but that doesn't cover this one. We can look into providing a way to enforce it, but it's not there.

For now, can you provide some details into why you are looking to force opening the Client to the Search view? Thanks!

Justin,

Sure.  We are moving from a folder based structure to one using mostly metadata.   To remove the mindset of using folders and to promote usage of metadata we want the user to open up to the search screen.  Any way to enforce this would be appreciated.
