Feature Request: Prevent Form Task Connecting to Itself

posted on June 15, 2018

You are not suppose to be able to connect a task to itself,  but, somehow, while moving and rejoining tasks within a forms process, we have had a task connect directly back to itself.    See highlight:

This puts the process into an infinite loop, in this case continually saving documents to the repository and then repeatedly calling the workflow. OUCH

Again, I realize you shouldn't be able to do this, and I can't purposefully recreate it, but we have seen this occur twice.   That little arrow connecting back to itself is easy to miss, especially in a large process diagram.

Can the process diagram be made a little more robust to totally prevent this, or at least generate a warning during the validation.

A lot of problems can occur in a  very short time when this occurs!!

Thanks,
~ Andrew

So if we're on 10.3 the only way to remove the arrow is to upgrade to 10.4 and it'll let us select the arrow and delete it?

For 10.3, you can delete the task and add a clean one back in.

In 10.4, we made the process designer more robust by showing an error in this case on validation, allowing you to delete the arrow if it does appear, and cleaning up the arrow on import. We never found a reliable way to reproduce this issue, so are only fixes are better ways to catch it and fix it. If anyone does have a reliable reproduction method, please let us know.

We just updated to 10.4 last night. This morning I was able to select the little arrow and delete it!!!! Woohoo!

In Forms 10.4, additional validation checks have been added prevent an issue like this from occurring. However, if it does somehow still occur, you should now be able to select the arrow and delete that flow path back to itself.

I am seeing this same thing in Forms 10.3.1.553.

Have you been able to reproduce it reliably? Or is it just showing up?

I have not been able to spend a lot of time trying to replicate the issue yet. I have let our team know to be on the lookout for it and let me know if they are able to reproduce it.

We'll take a look to try and see how you got it in this state as well as preventing it from actually succeeding through validation. It should be prevented in all cases, and I can't recreate the issue internally. Please let me know if you find any more reliable way of reproducing the issue.
